Artist Statement
Alexis Montoya’s work explores the interplay between food, culture, and community within The Bronx. Through a blend of collage, photography, and digital media, she seeks to capture food as more than sustenance, but as an expression of memory, heritage, and communal bonds.
leftovers
Where abundance meets excess, leftovers appear. Too much, too full - a meal to enjoy again later. leftovers enhance over time, are made anew, forgotten, discarded. Inspired by the Bronx, where food insecurity fuels a culture of creative food solutions, ignites a diverse culinary palate, and inspires a highly sought-after food scene, the leftovers collage series is a visual hallmark of this reality and that of the artist. The leftovers series concluded in June 2025.

homemade
In recipes passed down, dances in the kitchen, and the familiar taste of home, we see the value of anything homemade. In it, we honor what has come before us and what will come after. The homemade series is a personal challenge to reflect, repurpose, and reconnect. I dug through family and personal archives (grainy photos, pre-me photo albums, all or it) to create something new out of what’s always been there. It’s about legacy, intention, and reimagining source material.

For Bon Appétit’s A Skeptic Tries column, I channeled my process from leftovers while attempting to capture the core of each story. The artwork for this project is created first by hand and then edited where necessary on Photoshop.
